After the plaster is applied to the walls, by whatever method, it needs to be smoothed. You can barely see Marilee's trowel, but it is there, covered with mud. A wooden float is used for the first layers, leaving them rough enough to bind to another coat. A metal trowel is used only on the finish layer when you want it nice and smooth.
